With events in London, New York, and Paris, I have a confident prediction: the models won’t be flashing smiles. A Model maintains an expressionless facial stature that is in vogue on all the runways, a stoic expression remains a staple of model behavior.
Critics of the fashion industry often make light of the non-smiling model, a trend that has

propelled over the years. Catwalks have long been known for no smiles – except when designers make an appearance with flowers at the end of a show.
Similarly, fashion editorials rarely feature smiles; they're very rare.
Isn't fashion about pushing boundaries? So why do models maintain the same solemn expressions season after season, year after year?
The demeanor of fashion models communicates more than one message. It's rooted in a heritage of aristocratic disdain seen in centuries of portraiture, evolving into the 19th-century's society calling cards, complete with what we'd now call "profile pictures." Those old photos where no one is smiling and makes you cringe a little bit. But this is the look of the now famous runways.
Fashion photography, shows the status that the right attire could bestow upon the wearer in

an increasingly mobile society. Essentially, it says: "wear what I am wearing and you too will look like a million bucks" all without the welcoming smile we typically use to engage others.
A smiling model could be misinterpreted as amused or embarrassed by the designer's creations, potentially undermining the collection's success and the designer's reputation. So, models all over the world must maintain an air of otherworldly confidence, embodying the designer's vision while hoping not to stumble.
While it may seem like a simple lack of smiles, the expression—or lack thereof—of fashion models is a performance, conveying status, confidence, and the designer's aesthetic vision.
